WXII 12:

WS/FCS leaders and board members discuss budget concerns, request for local funding

The district’s current budget issues were also discussed. Since late March, leaders have been grappling with multi-million dollar budget shortfalls and the discovery money was spent by the district without board approval. In some tense moments, board members pressed district leaders on what went wrong and what is being done to fix such issues moving forward.

One board member, Sabrina Coone, expressed frustration about what she sees as a recurring problem.

“I'm frustrated. I am frustrated beyond belief that we are in a place where we're saying the same thing again that we said last year, that we said the year before,” she said. “And I'm supposed to sit here and go, ‘OK, this year is going to be different.’ I can’t do it.”

WS/FCS leaders review code of conduct, discuss possible changes

However, at Tuesday’s workshop, school board members raised questions about how effective the code is at giving students consequences for their actions.

“Are students experiencing consequences for their behaviors? Maybe,” Sabrina Coone, a school board member, said. “Have the consequences changed over time? Yes. And I think some of them have changed to where we’re not giving consequences to some of the students who need consequences.”

School board members say they’re concerned the code places too much responsibility on teachers to facilitate consequences for students and implement restorative practices while still teaching other children.

“We can't hold staff accountable,” Coone said. “But we can hold policy accountable”

There were nine seats up for grabs and six of them went to brand new board members.

Sabrina Coone-Godfrey is another new member, who's looking forward to working with a *mostly* new team.

"We have three really strong incumbents that I believe have a good, strong, solid voice," Coone-Godfrey said. "I think the folks that have been elected, everyone's heart is in the right place to serve the district."
